Our tester was equipped with the available Audi Virtual Cockpit that features a large, So, what looks to be a nicely-sized speedo and tach are just incredibly life-like virtual simulations. Where the virtual cockpit really earns its money is by viewing and navigating via the large Google Map images. Very high-tech and cool. If you prefer to have your navi in the traditional space, the available 8.

Speaking of access, for those of us who are addicted to our iPhones, the Apple CarPlay kept us connected easily. So that made driving this A4 one to savor. The appreciation starts under the hood, with a revised 2. And it hauls — this is a seriously fast sedan. You constantly feel tapped into that tsunami of torque. This is what a fine European sedan is all about. But go light on the gas, and you should do much better. We wish you luck in that pursuit. Everything is perfectly-matched — this is what an Audi is all about.

The clutch take-up is silky smooth and light enough for commuting, the shifter feels Teflon-slick and well-defined, meshing with the input levels of steering and braking.

Clutch engagement in our test example was near the top of the travel; combined with the evenly spaced pedals, it makes heel-and-toe skills look easy. Similar to the 2. Output is up from horsepower and lb-ft of torque to horses at rpm and lb-ft at rpm; its torque-rich character and lag-free personality remain unchanged. In our hands, the A4 manual returned some nontypical results. Completing the zero-tomph dash in 5. While a tenth of a second may be a less than an earth-shattering victory, it does buck the current trend of automatics being quicker than their manual counterparts.

Our test driver found the best launch by a clutch-slipping engagement between and rpm. Both versions cleared the quarter-mile traps at mph and are governed to a top speed of mph.

A rear-drive BMW i coupe with same engine paired with a six-speed manual needed 5. The new kid on the block, the comparably priced and slightly more powerful Alfa Romeo Giulia AWD with its standard eight-speed automatic, also fell behind the A4, posting 5. In fact, much like the A4 as a whole, its perfectly adequate. The shifter is smooth if not particularly quick and the clutch is light and easy to modulate, not unlike the manuals found in the Audi's Volkswagen-branded cousins like the Golf and Jetta.

Don't interpret that as damnation by faint praise, however. A manual comparable to that of, say, the Civic Type R , would be decidedly out of place in a stock A4. The existing unit instead complements the A4's technophile personality without feeling like an anachronism.

Better, the manual is not relegated to the base model A4. In fact, it's not even offered on the front-drive base model, but rather exclusively on A4s equipped with quattro—regardless of trim.

Audi will happily sell you one. You don't even have to give up adaptive cruise control or any of the other modern tech the A4 comes replete with. The rest of the A4 is exactly what you'd expect of a modern Audi: comfortable, quiet, well-built, and slightly sporty.

Tested: Audi A4 T Quattro Manual

The new model looks a little crisper, a little more athletic, but still has the tasteful lines that seem to age effortlessly through the years. Out back there are LED taillights, a sporty integrated rear spoiler lip, and fat dual exhaust pipes.

Finished in Daytona Gray Pearl Effect, our tester was beautifully turned out — it looked expensive, tasteful, and elegant — but never showy. Audi figures driving is the entertainment to get your heart thumping. The design is modern, clean, architectural. Every single switch looks designed, not just for looks, but for feel, function, and working as part of the whole. The pull-out seat bottom extension makes this a perfect place to sit for drivers of any height.

The rear seat is also generous for adults, and we were also impressed by the large cargo hold created when you fold them down. Our tester was equipped with the available Audi Virtual Cockpit that features a large, So, what looks to be a nicely-sized speedo and tach are just incredibly life-like virtual simulations.

So that made driving this A4 one to savor. Audi tells us that the take rate for the A4 with the manual is a low but not unexpected 6 percent.

Even in the ostensibly sportier A5 coupe, the manual only attracts 10 percent of buyers. Tested: Suzuki Samurai JX. Buyer's Guide. View Photos. View Photos Car and Driver. LOWS: Overboosted steering, understated to a fault? Specifications Specifications Audi A4 2. Watch Next. Instrumented Tests. Largely banished and replaced with balanced handling.

If there's one strike against the A4 that can't be overlooked in the name of the stickshift, it's the anonymity. Picking out your gunmetal A4 from the parking lot at South Coast Plaza could result in a "dude, where's my car? Should that not be an issue, well, its time to get to the numbers.

A manual Cadillac ATS 2. It offers hp and lb-ft of torque, besting the A4 as well as the i—but there's no all-wheel drive variant that can be had with the stick. While the AWD vs. RWD battle is one that will rage as long as both exist, the Audi easily comes out ahead of both the BMW and the Cadillac when it comes to style—inside and out. If you're not hungry for power or attention and aren't looking for the most stimulating driving experience in the world, the stick shift-equipped Audi A4 is a solid choice of luxury sport sedan, or at least sporty luxury sedan for those who feel like you have to step up to the S4 to hit "sport sedan" status.
